Exercise and Attitude!

There are at least as many good motivating reasons to work out as there are days in the year. But if the hot sticky days of summer slow you down or the cold drab days of winter give your engine a hard start or if a mid winter malaise keeps you from running in nothing more than neutral, here are a few exciting ways to beat the blahs, activate your engine and get into gear.

You can get a great full body workout without even taking a step out the front door. All you need is a VCR and A BIG ATTITUDE. From warm up to cool down, the workout takes no more than 37 minutes. Specially designed and choreographed to enhance the fitness level of the full figured woman, the workout is orthopedic approved. Starring six full figured women and led by a Los Angeles certified fitness instructor who specializes in fitness programs for women over a size 12, everyone has a great time burning calories, toning and sculpting muscles while modeling some of the most eye catching , figure flattering workout clothes on the fashion scene. Olivia Goodkin, a successful corporate attorney, wife, mother of two pre-teen boys and one of the stars of the exercise video says the workout "gives your body the balance it needs. This program works muscles more specifically than the usual aerobics class. When I’m done, my muscles are firmer and tighter so I feel better about my body. Not only do I feel stronger but I feel a lot more attractive. "

And according to researchers at Wake Forest University if you work out regularly, people perceive you to be more attractive, even if you’re overweight. In fact, a recent study shows the fit plus size woman is thought to be more physically and sexually attractive than her non exercising counterpart. Conducted by psychology professors Kathleen Martin and Mark Leary, the study revealed overweight women are stereotyped just as favorably as thinner women if they’re labeled exercisers. The study also found the exercising woman is perceived as more active, healthier, neater, less depressed, more confident and more social than the woman who doesn’t exercise. "Our findings suggest women shouldn’t focus so much on weight in trying to improve how others perceive them. It may be just as effective to focus on becoming a regular exerciser – working out at least three times a week – if you’re trying to improve your image."

If you’re trying to improve your chances of keeping strong bones, staying injury free, active and independent into your senior years, start building your muscles now. Build with weight bearing exercises (walking, aerobics) and muscle tension exercises (mini squats, leg presses). The more of these you do in your 30’s,40’s and 50’s, the lower your risk of injury to your knee, hip and ankle joints, says Michael Kaplan, M.D., team physician to the San Diego Chargers (and advisor for the Workout With A BIG ATTITUDE videotape.) Since muscles are the shock absorbers for joints, women who don’t strengthen the muscles around those joints run a greater risk for injury. And because heavier women put more weight on their joints, they face other potential problems like a greater likelihood of knee degeneration. But, for instance, since thigh muscles are shock absorbers for knees, you can help take pressure off your knees by strengthening your thigh or quadriceps muscles.
